Heian Shodan is usually the second Shotokan Kata that students learn.
   
It consists of a downward block (Gedan Barai), an upper block (Age Uke), a middle level stepping punch (Oi Zuki) and the sword hand block (Shuto Uke).  There is also a wrist release and Hammerfist strike within the first few moves. 

Start the Kata from the rest / ready position

Feet Position on Diagram Facing Screen
Your feet should be shoulder width apart
Toes slightly turned in
Weight on the balls of your feet, not on your heels
It should feel as if your big toes are stopping you from falling forward
Arms should be relaxed and held in front of the body at a slightly forward angle
Breathing should be relaxed and regular

   Turn your head to your Left, facing attacker
