Abernethy presently holds the rank of 4th Dan black belt and is a senior instructor for the British Karate-Do Chojinkai. He has been training in Karate since childhood and gained his first black belt at the age of seventeen. He is currently an A-class E.K.G.B. Kata Judge and has officiated at numerous national events.

The majority of Iain's training & study has revolved around the effective application of the techniques and concepts contained within the traditional Karate Katas (forms). Iain's study of Karate's original fighting techniques has included a great deal of research into the now much neglected close-range & grappling aspects of the art.

Iain is also the author of the book, "Karate's Grappling Methods." The book was described by Geoff Thompson (who wrote the book's foreword) as, "A marvelous and credible book on the application of Karate kata!" The book covers the principles & techniques associated with the close-range fighting & grappling of old style Karate.

Iain has also had a number of articles published in Martial Arts Illustrated & Traditional Karate Magazines. Iain's work was described by Traditional Karate Magazine as, "Both thought-provoking and educational."
Due to the book's success, Video Martial Arts International approached Iain to film an accompanying set of videos. Iain's book, tapes & seminars have proved extremely popular with those who wish to practice Karate as the complete system of fighting it was intended to be.
